Hillside erosion is one of those problems that gets worse every time it rains. Soil creeps down, the yard looks rough, and nothing you plant seems to hold it back for long. That's exactly what we were dealing with on this Tolland property - a sloped hillside right at the edge of the backyard that needed a real, lasting fix.
We built out a natural boulder wall along the base of that hillside to hold the slope in place and give the yard a clean boundary. The boulders are stacked tight and fitted together so the wall works as a unit - not just a pile of rocks. That kind of structure holds up over time without shifting or washing out. It's the type of hardscape solution that looks good and actually solves the problem.
On the other side of the yard, the area under the deck was a mess. No real surface, nowhere useful to walk or store anything. We came in, graded it out, and laid down fresh crushed rock across the whole footprint - under the deck and wrapping around both sides of the staircase. Now it drains properly, weeds have nowhere to root, and the space is actually usable year-round.
Crushed rock under a deck is one of those upgrades that's easy to overlook but makes a big difference day to day. No mud after a rainstorm. No grass that turns into a patchy, shaded mess. Just a clean, low-maintenance surface that holds up without any attention from you. Paired with the boulder wall, this yard went from a headache to a space the homeowners can actually enjoy.
These are the kinds of projects we do all the time - practical hardscape and light excavation work that fixes real problems. If you've got a hillside that's moving on you or a space around your deck that's never been right, we can sort it out.
